Well, after back to back vacations and crazy work stuff I finally got another full day of working on the bug in. Nothing real spectacular just some tedious stuff that needs to get done anyway. The rust repair is just about done so I should be able to get it smoothed and shot soon *crosses fingers*. I know I know you all want pics, I just didnt take any today but I will hopefully get back to working on it a couple days a week to get it done so next time I make some progress I will take pics.

I got a significant amount of work done over the last 3 weeks. I finally got everything smoothed with body filler (some areas took several attempts-filling then sanding then filling some more and sanding, you get the picture) and shot my final full coat of primer on the car last week. I may still need to spot prime a couple areas where I rub through but the majority of priming is over. Today I wet sanded..........all..........stinkin.........day.......but it was worth it. I have all 4 fenders finish sanded to 600 grit and the hood. The rest of the car is about halfway sanded as I would jump from one area to the next so I didnt get bored sitting in one spot for too long. Next week I have Tuesday and Wednesday off so I plan to get at least the fenders and hood in color (Im painting all the removable stuff as one batch and the car as another) and get the rest of the car finish sanded. If the car gods smile upon me I may even get the whole thing in color but Im not trying to rush it so if any area needs extra attention I will take the time to do it right.
Here are pics of the car today, not much to look at because its covered in primer mud as I call it, the white stuff is all just streaks of residue from wet sanding.
The last two were of the roof line drip rails/pinch points, not sure if you can see the detail but they used to be two pieces of metal (the joint between the roof piece and the side) folded over each other and over time it pitted real bad. I couldnt leave it like that so I took body filler and filled the area over with my finger then smoothed it. I think it turned out much better looking than even when it came out of the factory.

Looking good. If those are original hub caps, I'd remove them before they get marked up. Originals are tough to find. Repops are everywhere but aren't the same quality.

Good call, I do believe they are original as they are very thick and strong where as I could see a reproduction piece being much lighter and flimsier. They arent in the greatest shape so I have left them on thus far but I might just take your advice and remove them for the duration of the work just to be safe.

Chromers love those originals. I've seen some that were marginal that were brought back nicely. Of course, the less damage, the easier they will be to restore. If you're gonna do it, you might as well do it right, eh?

As promised I shot some paint today. I got three of the taillights, fenders and the hood done. I have a 2 car garage that I use as my paint booth. for the hood I had it sitting on some sawhorses and the fenders and taillights were hanging by some twine from the ceiling. As I was wiping them down with wax and grease remover, one of the fenders (not one I was wiping) fell because the twine broke. As it fell, the bottom of the fender bent and cracked the primer so I set that one aside and painted the other three.
I am off again thursday so I plan to fix that fender and finish sand the decklid so I can get those two pieces painted then Id like to finish sand the rest of the car. If I can get that all done next week I should be able to paint the rest of the car and be done painting.
Im really pleased with the way everything turned out. I didnt end up with any runs in the clear and everything sat pretty flat, it will get better when I wet sand the clear which should really make it shine. On to the pictures.
fenders prepped, hung and ready for paint
in color before clear
and finally in clear
After dry, test fitted on the car and in the sun so I could see the metallic really shine.
The color is much nicer than I thought, it is darker in the shade but looks lighter with some light on it and it really sparkles in the sun. It has a bit of a pinkish tone to it but its not overpowering. Im really liking this color and it should look awesome when the whole car is done. Stay tuned for more
