My mom just bought a "70 Beetle and asked me to restore it for her. Ive got my budget for parts, already have the paint and Im ready to start. She drove it down to my house today so I snapped a few pics, will upload them tonight.
Let the fun begin!

Edit: does anyone know the best forums for these? I want to start looking around for information and Im sure theres a forum out there thats at least half as good as this one.[This message has been edited by joesfiero (edited 01-15-2012).]

I would LOVE to watch this. Beetles are some of my favorite classic cars!

Before I started tearing it down. Not sure why my phone took such crappy pics, I usually get great quality from it.
My daughter helping me get the headlights and fenders off
And after a couple hours of removing parts and sanding.
More to come! I will only get a chance to work on it sometimes late at night and on Sundays and Thursdays, if the wife and kid let me. I would love to get the car painted within a couple months. The first order of business is getting it torn down to make a list of parts and getting them on the way. I know I need both floor pans so once I get those here I will get the old ones out and start there. Then I can move on to getting the paint done and finally if there is money left over I might pull the engine and trans to seal up all the leaks otherwise it runs pretty good. The floor pans are really the only thing that is rusted underneath, everything else is pretty solid. I will need to weld in a few patch panels on the body but nothing major.

I love the VW beetles I had lots of them get the carburetors from the type 3 Mount them to the engine in reverse, meaning the one from the left goes on the right and the one from the right side of the type 3 goes on the left side of the beetle engine. The throttle cable linkages goes behind the fan housing and the hoses to link the two carburetors goes in front of the fan and below the generator Use a Kombie Clutch in this bug Use a twin point Distributor, a lined and set up the right way Place a good insulated cap over the battery, in case that some one fat sits in the back seat where the battery is. Remove some of the springs from the front suspension allowing it to drop a bit. Remove the rear torsion bars and refit them two or three teeth higher so when refitted the car will be a few inches lower 12 to 13 seconds for the quarter mile is easy the VW bugs are fun

Big VW forum:

They have their occasional snarky and condescending members, but otherwise it seems like a great forum. Lots of archived tech stuff.
I've never driven one but I have fond memories of the two old VWs my dad had when I was a little kid. They were fun to ride in!
