My son just called asking advice from the old man. Seems he has a problem with his car not starting after it sits for awhile. Sounds like a situation I have with the Fiero. He has to let it sit for 30 to 40 minutes before it will start. I told him in reading some threads on this forum, I would lean towards fuel pump. He says he as replaced both. He has a 1987 325i? It is 3 something. He recently replaced the in tank pump which he says is a low pressure pump. He replaced the other pump that is outside in line not to long ago. Being from the old school, it sounds like a problem we used to have with carbs. Heat sink. I used have an alumiunm plate under the holley dual feed double pumper on my Z just for that purpose.
Any ideas on what he should look at. He recently installed the engine after he overhauled it this last winter. He said the first 1000 miles it ran great, now he is having little issues pop up. He has noticed when he gets on it and revs over 5000, then he has idling/runability issues and then the not wanting to start.
Thanks!

maybe it is a spark issue? do they use a single coil? maybe it needs to cool off for a while?
in one of my old fieros the coil went bad, car would die and i would have to wait for tito cool down before it would fire again,
new coil fixed it.

Another often overlooked item that tends to cause mechanics to pull their hair out. The ECU. On the E30 it is above and behind the glove compartment. On older bimmers there can be issues with the solder joints for the main connector to the printed circuit board. Sometimes slightly flexing the connector while the car is running or being started can reveal the trouble. He also needs to check the main relay, it isn't your average relay and has been known to cause trouble as well. Look out for corrosion in the relay sockets as well. One more thing, the fuse contacts. The fuse/relay box is not the best plastic and time and heat can cause the fuse contact at the bottom to recede into the plastic and cause fuse contact issues. My son's 91 535 recently was having problems starting. Would crank great but not start. The problem was the Crankshaft Position sensor, sensor should read 540 ohms, was aver 3 Mohms. Changed it and no more problems. [This message has been edited by TONY_C (edited 07-21-2012).]
