Been looking for a new truck as my current one is falling apart. Found a 2007 F350 Diesel Super Crew Cab Short Box Single wheel. Its a Lariat Edition that's loaded to the hilt with every option available, including 2 tone leather, sunroof and 2 way remote start. Has 170K on it and is very clean, for a diesel I expected to see oil on the bottom of the motor but its very clean, no rust and never had a goose neck or 5th wheel installed. Looks well cared for. Has the 6.0L Turbo Diesel and 5 speed automatic. I am just wondering what to look at mechanically and what to ask? I am a chevy guy usually and know the duramax well but the powerstroke is new to me. The price is too good to not consider and I really like the truck.

Ya I have read about head gaskets issues, egr problem and injectors. Going to find out service records to see what has been done for maintenance. For the price I think I could risk it and a chevy in a 07 or newer is 25 to 30K where this ford in 11K.

Ya I already changed my mind. Talked to one of the diesel shops in town and he reccomended I do not buy it. Said If I wanted it buy it cheap because I would be putting 5K into the motor. Guess I'll keep looking. Being in North Dakota Diesel trucks are very hard to find right now, prices are way up because of all the oil workers buying them up.

IF you buy a 6.0 an 07 is not a bad choice. thre last year of production and the best sorted out.
Like everyone says though you will most likely have to spend some money on it to keep it reliable if you want to put a programmer on it. I shopped long and hard before buying my E99 7.3. if I had been willing to get a 6.0 I could have got a much newer truck for about the same price, but I decided to go with the older engine.
Plus I hate that straight piped 6.0s sound like leaf blowers.

I have a 2005 F250 6.0 Powerstroke that I got cheap and dumped the $5000 into. I absolutely love it. Tows like a dream, has loads of power and even gets decent mileage (16- better than my 5.3 Silverado gasser) I know it will do much better on fuel with a chip or programmer, just haven't done that yet. It sucks that the 6.0 is so fragile, but it has gobs of torque and power. There are TONS of them out there, including the VT365 (same engine, more or less) that Navistar put in a lot of their bigger trucks. Replace the head gaskets, stud it, new oil cooler, delete or replace the EGR cooler with a good aftermarket high-flow replacement (I installed a Bulletproof Diesel unit) use a high quality silicate free extended life coolant (I used Peak Final Charge) and install a coolant filter. After all of this I'm good to go for half a million miles (I hope).
Yes, it's a lot of work and bother, and shouldn't have to be done (these are big strong diesels, right?), but in the end I have a nice, strong diesel truck for thousands less than the other ones out there. There are thousands of these 03-07 6.0 trucks out there in good condition with head gasket problems. You can get them cheap if you're willing to get your hands dirty.
