Porsche 912 (Page 1/2)

Ive done lots of body work on them, but never paid much attention to mechanicals. Anyone here know about them. ? Mid 60s came after the bathtub 956 and looks like the 911. It has a 4 cyl w/ Webers. Guy wants to sell it and I might be interested. Body is in excellent shape with 40,000 miles but does need paint (just faded and worn). I can do paint and interior work, just dont want to mess with it too much mechanically because im not familar with them.

Isn't the 912 just a Beetle that someone sat on?

Amber and I have had two 912s. We had both to restore. One was too far gone, and the other we loved.

It came with no engine/trans but the rest was there. I got an engine and trans from PAP in North GA. We had to replace the floorboards and the passenger rocker. The mechanicals seemed identical to the same era Beetle.

Fun car. Sold it about 8 years ago in primer, ready for paint and to have windows installed for a grand. They seem to have come WAY up in price since then.

Tks, this one is nearly new except for faded paint and a few nicks. Hemmings puts average retail value at $21,000 for 1968. Online, looks like auction value is about $13,000. This has the same body style as all the 911s, except for the chrome bumpers. The paint is a no brainer for me...cost me $200 to shoot it show quality

If the price is right, jump on it. They do share the same body as the 911 and I never noticed the chrome bumper difference (thanks for the education). As I understand it, all the 912 and 911 "tubs" were the same. Sometime (I think in the early 1970s), the 911 got a few inches longer and that longer tub remained largely unchanged until 1996.

He wants $11,000. They only made 912 from 1965-1969. It was then totally replaced by the 911.

The interior is a bit different, too. Probably nothing to write home about, though. Minor trim if I remember correctly. Think of the 912 as the base model and the 911 as the sport model although neither of them were very luxurious back then. I'd offer him 9 and be happy with 10 if it's running well. They're a bit temperamental (as the 911s were) but fun to drive. VERY tail happy. Go into a corner a bit too fast and you'll be backwards.

Yep, well aware of that. Ive driven 911s. You get that with rear engines (behind the rear axle). They grip great with the weight on the rear drive wheels, but after you pass the sweet spot, its gone. Ive seen a lot of them not just spin out, but spin around like a top.

Kinda cool looking.....when you're not in them.

I think thats the European way. Even my 450SL is pretty plain jane on the interior. Totally reminds me of a 60s Volkswagen with some wood trim thrown in. Pretty cheap for a car that at the time sold for the price of a house.
