Good buddy of mine has a 1999 Audi A4 1.8ltr. 5V Turbo that won't start. I know nothing about these engines. Looked at it for him, and concluded the coils are mounted directly on top of the plugs, or whatever is used to create the spark. Don't know how to check to see if it's getting spark or fuel for that matter. Just decided to not start out of the blue one day. Hadn't done anything to it, he went to take it and it just won't start.
Am open to suggestion as to how to go about troubleshooting the starting problem. It turns over, sounds like it's got compression, and there seems to be some kind of cover on the cam, so can't tell if the valves are opening or not by looking down the oil filler hole. (tried that ) Belts seem to be intact, not sure what/where to check next.
Anybody know these cars/engines?
TIA & HAGO!

I had an 2001 A4 that was nothing but issues.....
A sudden no start could be the crank sensor. Hooking up to the ECM is the easiest was to trouble shoot anything electrical on them. Either pay the dealer or get the VAG-Com cable/software.[This message has been edited by stickboy (edited 07-31-2012).]

Thanks for the response, +4U. I'll pass the info on, kinda figured that's what has to happen, but there's no "Audi" dealers or "experts" in the immediate area, so thought I'd take a shot at somebody here knowing what to look for.
