Just finished replacing the starter on my 97 grand am, has the 2.4 motor. The car starts fine now but the alt is not charging at all. Battery sat at 12.8 off and 14.5 on before I turned the car off to replace the starter. Is there something I could have shorted somehow or missed putting back on, only thing I removed to get to the starter was the air box and the oil filter.
As of this morning the battery sits around like 12.5 but when the cars on it goes down to like 11.9, then goes right back up when cars off.

Apparently, there's a fusible link at your starter motor(on the skinny wire?) that has burned through. Pull on it to see if it comes apart. If it does, replace it with another fusible link of the same gauge. [This message has been edited by carnut122 (edited 08-05-2012).]

A fusible link on the starter could cause the alt to not charge?

Yes, or a cable was left loose. The alternator power cable should run from the starter to the alternator. Take it all back apart and have a second look.

From what I read about your car, it's a VERY likely culprit.
