My nephew has an 84 Mercedes diesel for sale, with a recent motor/trans job in it. I think he wants too much, around 1200, and it needs paint. It's been pretty reliable tho. Not my cup of tea.

'Nother vote for the S10 or one of its clones. (I prefer Sonomas. But that's just me.)

For dependability, practicality and ease of maintenence you cant do better than the Toyota. (with the 22RE)
But....dont take my word for it. Ask those who have one and ask them how many miles do they have on theirs!

My 81 Mercedes 300SD has over 370,000 on it and I drove it over 900 miles last week alone. They are the ultimate flex fuel vehicle. A lot safer than any Japanese car of the era (and some later ones). They do require regular maintenance but parts are dirt cheap since the aftermarket supports them so well. I replaced all the ball joints, tie rods, bushings, wheel bearings, brakes, motor mounts and a few other things for around $200 in parts. Some of the AC systems use GM compressors which are relatively cheap but not the most reliable. The air suspension cars have their own sets of problems but can be converted to springs for a reasonable amount. Also watch for rust.

What are you looking for out of a vehicle? Daily point-A-to-point-B driver? Race car? Hot rod project? Long distance tourer?

You can't beat an '80s/'90s Caprice. Boring but very reliable.
Saabs/Volvos are pretty reliable but sometimes parts are a bit pricey.
EXP/LN7? Really? Mechanical parts are getting more difficult to find and body parts are just about impossible since they were kind of limited production (couple years, I think) and they haven't made them in 30 years.
You can't beat the S10/Sonoma/Blazer/Jimmy/early Bravada (anything S10 based). The 4.3s don't get great gas mileage, especially in 4/all wheel drive form but they're very reliable. I had 171k miles on my '96 Jimmy and have almost 90k on my '04 Blazer. No real problems with either.
I don't know anything about the Mercedes and you couldn't give me a K car. They were junk.
