Goal to make the power tour. (Page 1/1)

Well guys. I have pulled my project out of long time storage. I have decided that nothing else matters this next year. The story is My father and I started to build a sand rail from the ground up. Its a Berrin Buggy venture frame. We purchased this in 2002 just before I graduated High school. I left for college and it sat in that garage with barely anything done besides assembly of the front suspension and floor tabs welded in. My father lost the house and we moved it to a storage unit where it has sat till this year. I sold my fiero to fix my daily driver and after the garage was cleared out I brought the rail home. My father has been having a lot of health issues and I have now become determined to get this thing built. I want to finish building it with him and Have a goal to drive it to Texas next year to do the power tour. As I do some work I will post pictures of the build any comments are welcome. We have all the paper work and this thing will be street legal. The motor is a 1776 air cooled With a type 1 Trans.

Kewl! I honestly would like to see the pics from this. When I was a baby, my father bought a Corvair and used it to build his own dunebuggy. I remember him having it when I was young and he sold it just before we moved to Colorado. I still like to flip back through my parents photo album, when we visit, and look at the pictures of it when he was building it.

Hoisted up for painting the frame. This has been the biggest pain so far. tubes take a lot of paint to cover.

Motor waiting to go in. We are gonna fire it up and see how it runs before we regasket it. Its been sitting for about 10 years but still spins nicely.

The stands I made to feel safer while painting and working around the frame. Its so light a hit will knock it off a traditional stand so I came up with these. Also helps when I paint since I can jack the front and it rotates on the stand but the stand dose not move.

I'd start with the rmv.. as it'll take time to get a vin for that ..
Tstang429 SEP 04, 11:07 PM
Getting a vin for it is not that hard. We have the receipt from the motor sale and the frames receipt. The frame came with its torsion tubes in the rear which makes it even easier because its not a yard part I have to prove is not stolen. We have a folder locked away with every receipt including nuts and bolts. I know the steps to make it street legal. You make an appt with the state highway patrol to inspect it. They sign off and send it to Columbus. Once its reviewed they send back to inspection center and your called to bring it in to have them attach a vin plate. Typically its around a 30 day turn around for it. But nothing is done until its completed and taken in as a complete vehicle.

One thing I cant find in writing and I know I can call but just wondering if anyone has dealt with. The brake system will it pass the inspection running a standard single reservoir system. That is what we have a factory master setup from a beetle. I am just not sure if I need to change to a modern dual master setup. We have adjusted the pressures in the system so it has a less front braking due to no weight up there. I know a dual setup is safer in the end due to separate circuits but I am trying to build this with spending as little as we can and some parts I bought before I new more about automotive.

whats the laws in your state. on custom fab'd frames...
here, they go by date of manufacture.. meaning if build in 2012, it's a 2012 car and all the headaches that that can bring..
here a FFR 33 would be a 1933 as thats the car it copied,, but if I build a one off type thing it be a 2012..
Tstang429 SEP 07, 03:48 AM
It will be a 2012 built but since we have documentation of the motors production year we only have to deal with the emissions of the motor for the year the motor was built. Ohio has no safety laws really written out. There inspections are mostly not stolen parts and passing emissions. Lights mirrors wipers safety belts. The bi yearly testing for plates here are only emissions and only in certain counties.
We got the entire frame in primer. I will never paint a tube frame again. If I ever repaint or build another its going to a powder coater. Each time i thought I got it all I found a tube or side of a tube I missed. Now onto making seat brackets and floor templates. Then I can get the pedals shifter and dash installed.
I have to scrap some rims soon as I have two many rims in my garage. Running out of space in my garage with all the crap I own. Getting annoyed having to roll the bike and lawn mower out each time i work, and thats a two car garage. I really need to get organized. The rails parts are taking up two shelving units along with several large boxes on the floor as well.

Well got to get the pics uploded. Today we got the seats in and the pedal assembly mounted. Right Now working on a dash for it. Think the dash is going to be built out of Pressure treated plywood. Trying to keep with the image that its built with laying around products.
