toyota corolla brakes rant!!!!!! (Page 1/1)

well the other day my wife calls and says that her car is not running right. well i go to her work to check it out the front caslipers seem to be dragging. take it to a friends house( her work is 20 miles from our house) pull them apart everything seems ok. put new pads on since they were a little worn. go for a drive about 3 miles the brakes start dragging bad. so the caliper need to be replaced, rebuild ones are about 45 a piece. since we are tight on money i looked into the rebuild kit and was told that the rebuild kits are discontinued. look on the web and rockauto.com have them in stock. well i needed to get the car back on the road by today. so i start checking things out and find out that the rebuild kits are still being made but advance, autozone and napa all don't list them for the corolla. They do list them for the Chevy prism which is the same car. the rebuild kit is only 4.99. all together i spent 15 dollars to rebuild the calipers and flush the brake lines. the car now stops like new and is back on the road. I am never going to buy the rebuilt one again when it is sooooooooo easy to rebuild them your self

I'm curious what year the car is and how many miles are on it. $4.99 sounds like a steal to me.

we at advanced sell the rebuild kits.. but stores don't stock them.. as almost no one would bother..
they'd get it from pdq (think warehouse) it take a day..
on your toyota, are you sure it was the clapper sticking, and not the slide bracket?

the rant isn't that they are not sold it is that they are not listed under a corolla just the prism which is the same car except for a few things. the car is a 98 and has 140,000 miles on it. and yes i am sure it was the calipers, i re-greased the the slider pins and they were siding fine. the car has been a very relaiable car for us. the only thing we have had to do to it is the power steering hose, valve cover gasket and now rebuild the calipers. i also just want to add it was the drivers side that was sticking but we did both just to be sure and safe.

the rebuild kits are listed under toyota.. maybe the counter guy/gal missed it..
most times unless the piston is pitted bad.. just moving the piston in and out a few times.. on the car.. fixes the sticking..
mopars with ceramic pistons.. are different.. but thats not the case here..
the rebuild kits are nothing really, an o ring with squarded off sides and a seal.. and a few copper gaskets to the bolt and if you're lucky a new bleeder

the rebuild kits are NOT listed under the corolla for a 98-2001. the only place that had them listed for the corolla was Rockauto.com the piston wasn't pitted too bad but it had some rust on it.

I work there at advanced, they are.. maybe not on the customer based inline store.. but we have a listing in the system under toyota.. I looked it up between driveries to com. shop accounts..
