Ok, been having the code for 'small evaporator leak' come up for the last few months and I just can't seem to nail it down.

Gas cap replaced, gone through the hose and replaced the ones that were dried and cracked - and it still keeps coming up.

Now I am not fully sure if I understand how it detects a leak - but I read that it basically pumps down the system and then the pump turns off - it then times when the pump turns back on again and as such determines if there is a leak based on the amount of time that has elasped. Is this true, if not what is the method?

could be one of the valves that control the vacuum for the test. Do you have to fix it? You may have to have a smoke test performed to find the leak.

I have this issue on my Aztek, but I just reset the code and ignore it. It happens once or twice a month.

I'm willing to bet the vent valve is hanging open, or the fuel tank seal has gone bad - where the pump flange seals, or even the schrader valve on the test port isn't sealing anymore. You really need to take it to a shop that can smoke test it, otherwise it is all guessing.

Use a vaccum gauge and apply 15-20hg of vacuum to both sides of the purge solenoid and see if it drops. The leak you have is small, so it may take a little time (1-2 mins) to drop, if thats the issue. I see these go quite often here at work. That will cause a small leak every time. -Jason
