What? Stock tires rubbing on the frame? (Page 1/2) |

I have a 2003 Mustang. It has stock size tires. Yet now the front tires all off a sudden rub on the frame on each side when the wheel is turned to the stops. In the last 2 months I have change struts, strut mounts, and the steering rack. I checked ball joints, and bearings today. Everything is tight. Any thoughts? You guys are the best. Thannks

What model Mustang? (Basic, GT, Roush, Cobra?) Lowered at all or stock ride height?

New tires? Not all are made equally. Better tires will have a wider tread than a cheap tire, even if the cross section width is the same. So a tire with a wider surface could rub when a cheaper one might not.
More likely, as previously suggested, your rack is a bit different, letting it turn a little too much.

"Stock size tires?" Are these the exact size tire? Or only the same rim size? A larger diameter tire will do what you're describing.

I believe that there are two different racks available for that year 'Stang. The V6 rack is easier to turn, but not as performance orientated. Just a guess on that one?
Did you do tie rod ends? It is quite possible that they are longer than the stockers. Have you had an alignment done?
I believe Curlup has a V6 with stock ride height.

Don't know why I didn't think of this before. The steering stops are built into the steering gear. Its possible that the new steering rack didn't come with the stops needed installed on the rack. They're kinda like big c-clips that are stationed behind the inner tierod to stop inward movement. If you still have the old steering rack, you should be able to pull back the inner part of the boot and see if there are shims installed and compare to the new unit.

The stock tires were purchased about a year ago. Base V6, nothing has changed just replacement stock parts. New stock struts, new stock rack from Advance Auto. The housing is a little different. I did not check for any clips and they needed the old one back for a core charge. The wheels did not rub before the struts and rack replacement. I have been told that bushings and springs can sag over time. None of that has been changed out. My ball joints seem tight. Jacked up the car, put a jack under the control arm and loaded teh suspention then tried to wiggle the tire side to side and up and down. No movement in the ball joint or bearing.

With the car up in the air, but suspension loaded, can you turn the wheels lock-to-lock and see where something may rub? How about softer tires, that are distorting while turning?
