02 Accord, exhaust gasses in crankcase? (Page 1/1)

A neighbor stopped me asking if I could fix his car. He showed me what was wrong, but since he doesn't speak real good english I'm not sure how it happened. Anyways the car runs good, but when you take the oil cap off you can feel the exhaust gasses pulsing out the fill hole. So, somehow the exhaust gasses are getting into the crankcase. It's a 4 cylinder V-tech. Basically, I know it could be the rings, so I'll do a compression leak down check on it. If that comes out good, what else might it be? Headgasket? (I'm not sure if that's even possible). Valve seals?

I think you're on target with the compression check and go from there. Although a certain amount of "blow-by is normal, I'm guessing this is excessive?

It feels a bit excessive, but I'll compare it to what my Mazda feels like. You can feel the pulses on the Accord which I don't think would be strong enough to knock a tennis ball of if you set one over the opened oil fill hole in the valve cover but it might if you reved the engine a little.

My old mazda would stall out if you took off the oil cap on the valve cover when it was running. About a month later it stopped running completely because it had no compression in 2 non-adjacent cylinders. This was a 1.8 liter v6.

Wow, I haven't tried it on mine... Wifes b-day and all has had me to busy LOL. Ours is a 4 cylinder, think it's 2.0 L.

some pressure is normal , if excessive might simply try replacing pcv valve

pcv valve might be blocked.. or rings are shot.. compression test will tell you more dry, then wet..
but you can cheat.. by driving behind the car.. and with the car in low(if automatic) or 1st/2nd if standard.. wind it up and let the engine do the braking..
blue smoke is a sure sign of rings are toast. on decel..
