99 Chevy Tahoe, the dome light is always on, at all times, car on or off, dome light defeat button pressed in or not. The door and courtesy lights can be turned off with the dome light defeat button, or they turn themselves off after 40 seconds or so of opening and closing a door. The the push button reading lights on the domelight assembly do not work. Replaced the entire domelight assembly with one from a junkyard, exact same symptoms.

OK got this partially figured out: the connector that was plugged into the dome light had three wires: orange, black, and bown. I unplugged this harness, and started pulling the harness out through the domelight hole in the headliner, and found an orange and white wire, just cut off and exposed, laying under the headliner. Went to the junkyard and got a new connector so I wouldn't have to cut the other one, which it turns out goes to the optional garage door opener. Which has the exact same connector.
Now, the domelight and courtesy lights can be turned on and off when the dome light defeat button is pressed, AND the ignition is on. BUT, when the ignition is off, the lights never turn off after the car is turned off and the door is closed. The timer never turns them off, like it did before for the courtesy lights.

Does your dimmer switch for the dash gauges have a dome light on position? It is possibly stuck on?

The dimmer on the dash does have a domelight on position all the way up, like the Fiero does, and also has the domelight defeat button
Found another interesting symptom: If you press the unlock button on the keyless entry remote, the lights come on, and go off after 30 seconds or so, as designed. When you press lock, they turn on for 5 seconds or so, also as designed.
Also replaced the headlamp switch assembly shown above, with no effect.

Finally figured this out. The switch on the back for the passenger side barn door has 3 functions: rear defroster, power lock release, and a door ajar switch, all built into the unit. MOST of the wires for the door ajar signal are purple, and there is a purple wire at the back switch, as well as two other two wire connectors. So by unplugging the purple wire, I thought I had tested it to see if the domelight would turn off, and it didn't. Turns out, the door ajar, just for the back switch, is the connector with the black and orange wires. unplugged that, and the domelight turned off after 45 seconds, as designed. So problem solved, except that the replacement switch is only available at the dealer, and costs $50. Luckily it isn't my truck
