Could use some help on a 2002 MITU Galant GTZ 3.0 (Page 1/1)

Alright so the car has had a slight misfire for awhile now. Never wanted to do the plugs and wires because it involved taking off the upper plenum and all that bull but yesterday it started to feel like it ran on 5 cyl when accelerating, when driving down at a constant speed or decelerating it was fine. Just did the plugs and wires. the plugs had 80k and the wires were stock so 175k. still doing it. Disy maybe????

With the engine off, pull one plug wire. Start the engine and see if it affects the idle. Turn off engine and repeat. When you get to the dead cylinder, there will be no change in idle. Yep, it could be the dizzy.

Was one of your plugs more fouled than any of the others, so you might know which cylinder was causing troubles? Maybe you have some real bad carbon buildup causing knocking, in which case a tank of high octane gas and a long highway drive might help...
Is the coil built into the distributor, or seperate? checked the distributor cap and/or the rotor?
I'm assuriming you're right about it having a distributor...I still find the notion odd for a more modern engine, but it wouldn't be the only one out there...

I can pull them off the dizzy but wont they just ground themselves to what evers around them? Some forums (mind you all these galant forums SUCK) but some people say that the main contact on the dizzy breaks off and the electricity jumps the gap OK at idle and constant speed (where more spark isnt needed) but on acceleration it cant jump the gap efficently. Looks like i have to pull the cap to see whats up.

Good plan. For some reason, when I think of pulling the wires one at a time, I forget the wire has two ends.

And your description of what commonly goes wrong on these distributors certainly would cause your issues. It'd be the same as having a break in a wire or your spark plug gap too wide.
