97 Grand Am 2.4 liter 5-speed
Got in one morning and no start, no crank, no click, nothing. Nobody is ever around to help me so I couldn't test to see if there was power going to the solenoid. That being said, I went to Napa today and bought a solenoid, installed it and put the starter back on the car. After all this, still no crank. The wife was there today so I had her turn the key while I held the test light and there is no power getting to the solenoid. Battery has plenty of charge BTW. All fuses appear to be okay also. I crawled under the dash and the clutch pedal is fully engaging the clutch safety switch.
What do ya think?? I'm thinking of tearing the clutch safety switch out and just connecting the wires to bypass it. Any help is appreciated, this car is my daily beater so any redneck engineering is also welcome

Forgot to add, fuel pump primes, lights come on, everything else is normal when you turn the key.

No power to both the big cable and the little wire on the solenoid? If so, you have issues with your switch/wire and battery cable. I'm guessing you're referring to only the switch wire?

Maybe it's a bad switch?

Yes, only the switch wire. I'm assuming since that the fuel pump is priming the ignition switch is ok??

I'm thinking that it only means the switch is OK in the "run" position with no guarantee that it's OK in the "crank" position.
See if you're getting 12v at the clutch switch when you turn the key to the crank position. I think you may have it right to begin with. It's probably the clutch switch.[This message has been edited by carnut122 (edited 12-31-2012).]

Try this, it worked on a 2004 Gran Am today.
Put the key in and turn it to ACC., do not crank the engine. Let the car sit like that for 30 minutes. Take the key out and wait 10 minutes. This process will reset the "Body Controll Module". Then attempt to start the car.
In our case a new battery was installed in the car. The battery tech did not tighten the positive cable to the battery. Car ran great from battery shop (Walmart) to the house. Following morning the car did not start. Tightened the cable, charged the battery with a charger, attemted to start with no joy. Looked at all fuses and relays, all good. Tapped the starter and selinoid, no start. Checked volts at the starter and selinoid, no volts. Everything else in the car lights and etc. worked fine. Did the reset on the BCM and the car fired right up. Go figure. Well we're happy now, give it a try.
