2001 Alero front wheel bearing... Won't come off!! (Page 1/1) |

Ok so Im working on a 2001 Alero. It needs a new front wheel. I got all the bolts out and I can get the CV shaft to pop out to. I just can't get the wheel bearing assembly to come off. It won't move at all. I sprayed it down with PB blaster and left it for tonight. Tomorrow I am going to try to get my air compressor to work and stop blowing the garage beaker so I can try to get my air hammer to get under it and break it free. Thats the only thing I can think of. Any body else out there had this issue or know of a better why of getting it off?

The shop had to use an air hammer to get the front wheel bearing off my Blazer (4wd). After 80k miles, they were damn near welded to the rest of the truck. PB Blaster probably won't do any good. Sledge hammer works well, too. (Seriously.)

I have had similar issues with several different cars with the steel wheel bearing in the aluminum upright, I take a cut off wheel in a right angle die grinder and cut the flange of the wheel bearing in between it and the upright just enough to get the tip of thin chisel into it and whack it with a hammer, this usually gets it moving a bit and then I just work my way around it putting a screw driver in the gap on the opposite side as I work around it. I step up the thickness of the chisel as i work around it and have had great luck doing it this way after I have it out I clean up the bore and anti seas the hell out of it and the new bearing. bearing? I would suspect the front used a hub. Could you take pictures of it and post them? On our 2000 Bonneville (yes I know that's not the same platform as the Alero) the front used a hub. There was a axle shaft nut you had to remove. You also had 3 bolts tucked in behind the upright that held the hub into the upright that you had to remove. After those came out a knock with a rubber mallet to free the axle shaft up and then a few knocks with it on the hub got it to start seperating.
Yup, I did a search for parts and it looks like your Alero uses a hub.
You can see the 3 bolts I was talking about in this picture that come in from the back side. Did you get those out?[This message has been edited by Khw (edited 01-21-2013).]

Turn the steering wheel all the way towards whatever side your working on. Put extensions or a pipe or anything solid between the hub and something solid on the car. Start the engine and turn the wheel the other way. It will push it right off. Or get a steel rim from the junkyard without a tire and bolt it on. Love tap the rim with a sledge. This will give much more leverage than just hitting the hub itself. And alot more room to swing the hammer. Just remember to work all the way around and not just in one spot.
