I am looking to replace a clutch fan with an electric unit. Does anyone have any tips or things to look for?

What is it on? You'll need to run thick enough wire to power the fan. Use a relay that is kicked on by an adjustable temperature sensor. So, what else do you want to know?

It is an '06 H3 (3.5 I5) and the fan causes a notable vibration and loss of power when it engages. I would also like to be able to disable it if going through a deep river.
Thanks.

That's the little Hummer? What engine do you have in there? I think it's the Vortec 3500? If so, it's basicaly a Colorado, maybe you can use a fan off that?
I know in my Tracker, I removed the clutch fan for an electric fan for deep water crossing. The best bang for the buck fan (efficient moves lots of air) is the fan from the 90's Ford Taurus.
Cheers!

Correct, it is closely related to the Colorado/Canyon. I was under the impression they were clutch fans too. This might end up being easier than expected.

That sounds like the route to take. You can put a switch in between the power going to the relay to disable the fan, but you might want to put a lighted one in to remind you when it's in the corrrect position.

Skip the switch. You let somebody take it to the store and it comes back blown because it overheated. Put a thermoswitch on it so its all automatic like stock. If the colorado in fact is electric the wiring may already be on your truck.

I discovered that the other vehicles on the platform have clutch fans. But, I will try to use one of the spare slots in the fuse block.
Brand recommendations from anyone?

As long as you understand that no electric fan can move the air of a mechanical fan. There was a reason they put a mechanical fan on there ... the electrics weren't enough. They would have used the electrics in the first place if they could. [This message has been edited by TK (edited 02-07-2013).]

I took the clutch fan assembly completely out of my Mercedes. I replace it with a spacer and mechanical fan. I left the electric fan in place in front of the radiator on a separate controller. I reallly dont trust clutch fans any more than I trust electric water pumps. They say the clutch type reduces power and makes more noise, but not that ive noticed.
