This is a toughie as I'm 1200 miles from the car but my son in Colorado has a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 six, that suddenly decides to not start on occasion. When he turns the key to on, the volt meter shows 9 volts & cranks like crazy but doesn't start. A shot of fuel gets it to run for a brief moment, so it seems the fuel pump isn't working. It only does this periodically, other times it shows 12 + volts on the meter & starts & runs fine. Right now, it's in a no start / 9 volt state but its in a shop & when they hook it up to a scanner, the voltage jumps up to 12 & it starts & runs fine. Before the shop, he got a new battery, crank position sensor and checked all the wires. The shop is stumped & looks like they're going to give up. The scan shows nothing wrong but unplug the scanner & bingo, no start. I told him to just get a cheap small scanner, plug it in & see if it's driveable, probably not a good long term solution but he needs transportation right now. Any thoughts as to what is causing a voltage drain that goes away with the scanner hooked up ? Remember, it cranks over like crazy so the voltage to the starter doesn't seem low. Thanks
