Literally. Driving down the road my 97 Grand Marquis started smoking under the dash, below from the steering column area. Shut it off, disconnected the battery real quick, found absolutely nothing. Reconnected and drove away, did not do it again. My son pulled the whole thing apart later and found zero signs of anything ever getting hot. It was smoking pretty good, smelled like burning wire/plastic. We surmised that it must have been Ford's famous ignition switch problem, and replaced that. That was 3-4 months ago. Today it did it again. I shut it off, coasted to a stop, cranked it back up and it seems ok, except that I get to smell that stink again for at least a couple of weeks. I can't figure how anything can get hot enough to burn up this smell, and roll smoke out to boot, while leaving no signs of trouble. We cannot find ANYTHING that appears to have gotten hot, anywhere at all. Any good guesses, cause that's where we are at?

Not a guess but, a choice. Had about the same description happen in my LaSabre and choose to ignore it. A few years later, I sold the car with no problem noticed.

I had a 93 Grand prix that would occassionally have a poof of smoke come from the steering column, but the car never burned down....

I would think maybe blower motor resistor.
Or maybe something under the hood drips on hot exhaust, but getting into the cabin is odd.
