Old transmission fluid (Page 1/4)

I have always been up to date with my fiero fluid changes as it sits in the garage most of the time and can work on it when I want. My other car is a 97 grand am with the 2.4 which I have not been as nice too. The car is about to roll 160k miles and has not had the transmission touched since I got it (77k mi.) The transmission shifts amazingly smooth and does not slip a bit but the fluid looks horrible. Would it be bad to change the fluid/filter now or should I just leave it alone.

What I have heard is that you remove 1/3 of the fluid, pour in new, repeat multiple times, then drop pan replace filter and put in new oil. How does the fluid look?

Lets just say its not red lol

Time to change it. Make sure you flush it too. With oil that used, there is bound to be some sludge or some other kind of deposits.

If the fluid is discolored, you will probably need to have it serviced in the near future (ie... rebuilt).

The new fluid may "clean" out some of the passages and cause blockage in others.

so change a little of it, the whole thing, or leave it?

How long are planning to keep the car? I would be leery of changing it all at once, but that is me.

I would plan on keeping some money aside for a tranny rebuild. I had to have mine rebuilt because of a sticking solenoid.... at less than 60K All it takes is for something to gum up the unit and then other items can be destroyed. Of course, this is worse case, but if your tranny is already showing signs of issues (fluid color)... you probably will need to repair/replace it in the future.
