Anyone here familiar with these? Saw one yesterday and it caught my eye. In doing some cursory reading someone said they got initially got 70MPG then were forced to do some modifications which cut the gas mileage dramatically. I am trying to find a couple more articles verifying this claim. Thought I might be able to find one cheap but wow, not so far. Fiero's are a better bargain.

They're not cheap anymore. Cool little cars. I doubt they got 70mpg but the HF version (stripped down/best gas mileage) probably got 45-50mpg. I'd buy one if I found one cheap enough.

HF was the fuel economy model, there is a middle model and the performance Si.I have a 88 Si and love it, real free revving engine, very lightweight car and feels like it. About as close to go cart like handling with a legitimate production car as was ever made. I have fixed everything on mine and got it painted and plan to keep it forever Mine is all stock which is what I wanted and is hard to find as many were modified, at least with different wheels.

I wanted a Fiero as a daily driver, and another as a showy car but if I can somehow find a CRX cheaply I will change my mind and get it as my daily driver. They seem like they would be fun to work on and since they have go-cart handling a riot to drive.

When they came out in 84, there were two models. One had a 1.5l engine, and one had a 1.3l. The 1.3l version had the highest rated fuel economy of any vehicle in the US in 84. At the time, my wife had a 57mi commute each way, so we bought a 1.3l model. It was rated for 55/67mpg. It never got 67, but I did manage high 50's a few times. It weighed 1800lbs, and handled great. It also had WAY more storage space than such a small car should have. It was a great car. My sister bought a 1.5l model, and it was a great car, too. I think she got around 40-45mpg hwy. The 1.5l actually accelerated pretty well. The 1.3l, with 60hp, um... didn't, but it would run over 80 if you had enough time.

Old thread, but I just found it. I own an '89 HF and over the past 2 years and 127K miles have averaged 52 MPG. It has 344K miles on it now and needs one of everything, but it still runs. The best I ever got was 65MPG on 2 or 3 tanks.......most of the time it's been in the 53-57MPG range (although lately it's been in the high 40's).
If you keep it stock and drive it like a little old lady and keep the speed under 60MPH then you'll get 50-60MPG all day long, but drive it "normally" and the mileage drops. These cars don't accelerate, but rather accumulate speed. Drive it with that in mind and you'll do well. Once you try forcing it to accelerate fast then the mileage drops off almost exponentially.
As far as prices go......most HF's were harvested by those that wanted to put a bigger engine in it (1.8L Integra engines, etc) since they are a lot lighter than your average CRX. That makes a truly stock HF hard to find....factor in nice interior, paint & low miles and prices can be a little on the high side. Funny thing is they still hold their value very well, so if you pay upfront for a nice one and take care of it then you can always resell it later for what you paid for it (maybe more).
LMK if you're looking for a bone stock, ratty looking '89 HF......I'll be needing to sell mine soon.
