Used to see a red one in Ft. Madison, Iowa when I was a youngster in the early 60's. He had put a bigger motor in it, I think 16 HP. I wanted one. It looked like a Jeep.

"Safe" is a relative term. Is a motorcycle safe? Wouldn't want to hit an SUV head on with one....but then, I don't plan to hit an SUV head on in ANY vehicle.
But...for a more direct look at the question. This is a 1959 model. 1959 is the year the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) was formed. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) wasn't formed til 1970. I'm sure you can imagine how little thought was put into safety as this thing was built.
