4.6 V8 in the Ranger (Page 1/1)

Why didn't ford do this? They could have just taken the 4.6 v8 from the panther cars and made it the top engine option. It would have completely blown away all the competition. Plus that engine in a rear wheel drive standard cab with some better gearing could have made a great sport truck! I have the 4.0 v6 in mine and sure its torquey but its geared like a school bus and sounds like the world is going to end past 3000 rpm. I'm sure it would have cost an extra couple thousand but I would have gladly paid it! See thats the problem with car companies these days. They think they know what we want and give us very limited options so we can only buy a vehicle we sort of like. The BRZ is another example. The boxer is a great engine but toyota has shown they can make an amazing high rpm inline 6 screamer. And once again I would pay more for it. In fact if they had done that I probably would have bought a BRZ.

Yes I know the tooling would cost more to be able to supply these engines would increase the cost of each individual car. But on high volume models like the ranger and brz the cost would be negligible.

The problem is you assume what you want and like is what the general public wants and likes. They build cars for the masses not the select few who would like a sportier truck. Well that's not "always" true. They do sometimes do limited runs such as the GMC Typhoon and Cyclone. Those are aimed at guys like you, but they usually have a short production time because the demand just isn't high enough. So I guess you can blame it all on the guys like you who don't buy enough of them when they make them.

GM put the 5.3L V8 in some of the GMC Canyon's and Chevy Colorado's. They Colorado/Canyon based Hummer H3 Alpha got the 5.3L V8 too.

I wouldn't consider the BRZ or FR-S a Toyota. It was a Subaru-Toyota joint venture, but the car was mostly designed by Subaru (The Chassis and pretty much the entire drivetrain was designed by Subaru.) The only thing Toyota contributed was the Fuel Injection and parts of the cosmetic design. Toyota also didn't like the way the Subaru motors sounded, so they made Subaru put an equal length header on them, so they sound like Civic's with an exhaust. The last great Toyota was the Toyota Supra and its one of the few Toyotas I would own.

The 4.6 isn't the greatest engine IMO. Our Mark VIII has a bad misfire

A litttle old lady ( yes a lil ole grandma) has a 4x4 early 90's ranger somebody dropped a 351 into... Now let me tell you first hand you can get your ace handed to you by a lil old bluehair. After I knew what was in it I didn't sand bag though lol, like yours it had airplane gears. Good thing that it couldn't rev like my scion can or I really wouldn't be telling anybody that story...ever.

Ex-GF of mine had a 88 Ranger with an early 90's 385 series BBF in it. She never did tell me what, exactly, it was, only that it wouldn't run on anything less than 93 octane. That was a FUN truck to drive. As long as you didn't have to turn...

i had a 87 ford ranger xlt with a ford 351 Windsor in it. with a c4 trans to match, it would haul ass like no other and it would tear ass off the start but it was misarable to drive. it wasn't able to handle the extra weight of the engine so i had to beef up the suspension and modify the rear to handle torque.

i ended up trading it for my 86 se and never looked back, yeah i took a rather large loss on power and money but it was extremely costly to keep upgrading it to make it able to handle decently. in the long run it is easier and cheaper to buy a car with a huge engine in it and upgrade the suspension in it. trucks under 2 tons really cant take the power with out the back being weighted down or else the back end will pull out from under you and be very very unsafe.
