One of those repairs (Page 1/1)

Brother calls me last week and says his brakes don't feel right. Tell him I'll come look at it this weekend. Drive four hours after work and get to Traverse City around 10:45 PM. Go out to the garage to see if it's anything obvious, look under each wheel, and see a bunch of greasy buildup on the left rear. Tell him it's probably a wheel cylinder, and go to bed.

Next day, take the wheel off, and the wheel cylinder is dry. However, rest of brake drum is coated in thick oil and the shoes are contaminated. Axle seal is leaking. 1 hour $20 job turns into $300 all day job. Ended up pulling both axles, replacing both seals and bearings, rear diff cover, new fluid in rear end, and new brake shoes.

Yeah, not fun. I just R&R the brakes on my '73 Int'l pickup. This has a full floating rear axle, so at least I didn't need to dive into the diff. My axle seals weren't leaking, but I changed them. Now, the brake cylinders... well, that was a different story. Took me 2 days to do front and rear brakes.

I just changed calipers, rotors and pads (front) on a Corsica... 1.5 hours

Your brother is luck to have someone like you looking out for him! My brothers don't even return my phone calls
