Can get some opinions on the Chevey Cruze? (Page 1/2)

I like the 42mpg that is advertised for the Cruze Echo. I do realize that the 42mpg could be "exaggerated" but it is better than the 25mpg that I get in my car now. So I am thinking of getting a new car?
I am looking into the 1.4 turbo with 6 speed manual.

Thanks, Rick

I dont know if you guys get the turbo diesel but it is better than the petrol ones. I found the 1.4 turbo gutless compared to the diesel. Is a Holden Cruze here.

I work at a shop that does service on a rental fleet, and the 1.4 turbo Cruze is a surprisingly solid car, MILES beyond the Cobalt and late-90s Cavalier. The ones that we get in are all autos, being rentals, and they are completely gutless unless you disengage the "Eco" setting (which is just one button press), after which they're rather competent semi-"executive" compacts. If I were in the market for a new 4-door compact, it would be on my short list along with the Impreza, Civic, and Dart.

^^ Agreed, when the diesel comes out in the US later this year it is definitely the one to get. However, it is a bit pricey compared to the 1.4 turbo car, and I believe will only be offered here with an automatic.

Just box one of those diesel units up and send it. I will swap it in a gas car and test your hypothesis

Does the diesel come in standard and or auto?

Some motorcycle engines are bigger than 1.4.

And they get twice the mpg, but they don't have 4 seats or rain protection. I have driven a Cruze and cant believe how quiet and smooth it drove. It seemed like a good car to me after the test drive. I thought about getting a bike just for the mpg, but have never owned one.

May experience is only from the rental side and I have rented about a dozen of them over the last 6 months. They are surprisingly comfortable and got great gas mileage however if you are 6' or over (I am 6') ingress and egress are not so great. Because of the high seat bolster height I hit my head on the roof line of the door opening constantly. Oddly once inside the car, there is a good amount of headroom. I like the dash layout and visibility is good. Nearly every car I rented had less than 2k on the odometer so I have no idea what long term will be like.

It cant be worse than my 06 GTO. That very complaint is what I complain about most in my GTO. It is imposable to stick my head out the window and look around without hitting my head on the door jamb or lowering my head to an unnatural position. I don't remember this problem when I drove the Cruze?

Available here with a 5 speed manual in the diesel with an optional 6 speed auto with active select.

Negative. My bike is a 750 twin and it only gets around 40 real world. But I do use all of the available 94 horsepower, quite frequently.

The Cruze (I hate seeing the name because the spelling irks me) will likely pull down mid 30s if you're not terribly kind on the go pedal. I've heard reports of people rolling over 50 mpg on the highway at fairly normal running speeds. But, if you're really looking for a new vehicle solely because of fuel economy, you may as well check out the Prius family. They're consistent and fairly cheap new or used, however, I'd downshift to pass you just to offset any possible environmental saving you could ever do.... Ya know, because I'm a dick like that
