Power steering leaks. 2 separate vehicles, same issue. (Page 1/1) |

First vehicle, 2002 Ford Windstar.
Power steering pump went out, and I replaced it. However, I cannot get the return hose to stop leaking from where it connects to the pump. I put an extra hose clamp on it. The worm screw kind, but it still weeps at the connection. The stock clamp is the kind you have to squeeze with pliers to release tension. I think the tension on it is too weak now. That's why I thought the extra clamp would solve my problem. No good.
Second vehicle, 2004 Dodge Ram
Pump is still good, but I started hearing the typical power steering whine, and the fluid was low. I topped it of, and looked for leaks. I discovered a leak where the hose connects to the steering rack. (I'm assuming that is the correct term) The stock clamp on this hose is similar to the kind on CV axle boots. It needs a special too to clamp it tight. So once again I put an additional hose clamp on it. (the worm screw type again) Yet it still seeps fluid. What the heck?
Any advice or tips appreciated.

Yes, that type would be better.

Id guess your hoses are both drying out too. New hose and clamps should fix both. Ive taken off hoses that were like rock from engine heat, and once the original seal is broken, it would never stop leaking.

Makes sense, but they still feel pliable, not brittle. I don't get much in the way of real cold temps here in Virginia Beach, but maybe breaking that seal has made the difference on the Windstar. However, on the Ram, I have not touched that hose, so I do not know why it started leaking out of the blue.

The steering return hose on my 76 Mercedes leaked like crazy at both ends. I put new screw clamps on both ends and didnt even slow it down. I finally got a new piece of transmission hose and replaced the original. When I had it off, it was more like a piece of pipe than a hose. No more leak with the new.

I suppose one could also use a sealer or silicone and apply lightly to the fitting before putting the hose on it. Probably a sealer that doesnt need oxygen to cure.
