I think I lost 5th gear in my 89 Acura (Page 1/1) |

89 Acura Integra 5 speed manual.
So I'm driving home in 5th gear with the cruise on. I hear a pop, and the engine redlines. I have to hit the clutch to disengage the cruise before my engine blows. I try to go into 5th again, but the same result. I drive home in 4th gear. I am assuming I have lost 5th gear since all other gears, including reverse, work. Is the transmission garbage now? I put this up here, on the forum, on the outside chance it might be something simple. How long might I expect the other gears to work before they fail also? This is my daily driver, and I WILL NOT rebuild or replace the transmission. This car means nothing to me other than a way to get to work. I don't won't the frustration of trying to rebuild something I have no affection for. Again, I only ask here, just in case there might be something simple or cheap that I can do. Otherwise I am in the market for another used DD. Perhaps a Fiero 4 banger.

I asked my friend, who is a Honda nut. He said it could be a number of things. But he said to check the Transmission Fluid first, then check your motor mounts. If they all check out good, then chances are your transmission went bad, 5th gear has its own fork and he said that could've broke. He said low gear oil will make your transmission pop out of gear, especially on the highway. And a failed motor mount will shift out of place to enough to not allow full travel of your cables.

My 87 Prelude pop'ed out of 5th a couple of times and I read on a forum to try Hondas Manual Transmission oil. Its more expensive than regular oil but worth it and the only thing to use in Honda's. It fixed my Prelude. There is a special manual transmission oil for GM cars too. Auto Zone has it.

Just to be clear, I heard a pop, but it will not go back into gear. It does not continue to pop out of gear. Some of the things craigsfiero might be possible, and I will check them. However, this car does have 225,000 miles, I do not hold out any high hopes of it just being low fluid or a bad motor mount. Thanks to both of you.

Another question, how long might I expect the first 4 gears to last? Will they start to fail also because 5th has crapped out, or are they independent of each other?

That's what I thought. Drive with the other 5. However, if something broke, the pieces are probably circulating through the tranny oil and will most likely cause future damage. I'd either dump the car (with full disclosure in the bill of sale signed by both parties), or at least drain and replace the fluid to see if any metal bits come out.

I wouldn't expect the transmission to last too much longer if the fork inside let go. The little metal pieces will destroy the rest of the gears in quick order. It could also be the Syncro as well. A failed motor mount won't allow the transmission to go into 5th gear because the cable would be maxed out on its range of motion. My friend said the 5th gear pop out is pretty common in the Integras as they get older.

Motor mounts good. Fluid good. 5th gear crap. Gonna see if I can get $500 for it. If not, it will go to Pick n Pull, and maybe I can get $200-$300. I am now officially in the market for another DD beater. Thanks guys.

I was able to sell my Acura for $600. Sold it to a Honda mechanic with the time to do something with it. I'm pleased with that.
