My shop is expanding and I find that I need to get a much nicer scan tool with more options. I currently have a OTC Genisys EVO, nice tool and used this line for 8 years now. great code and data reading. But updates are expensive, has limited diagnostic features and cannot do coding. I was hoping the new genisys touch would be better but looks to be same unit in a tablet style with built in scope, wifi and bluetooth. Nice but for 4K not sure if its worth it. I have a SnapOn modis also and hate it, overpriced junk to me.
After doing a lot of research I am looking at the Launch X-431 Pad or Autel MaxiSys MY908. Both tablet based, wifi, bluetooth diagnotic units with coding ability and according to them have OEM scan tool level diagnostics, controls and programming.
Anyone have any experience with these brands or have other suggestions?

We use a Genesys and a Pegasys at work. Use the Genesys for light stuff. 70%. The Pegasys will do a lot more but takes forever to load. It has coding capabilities, But our company doesn't want the liability of someone being able to use it outside the shop. I can get into such things as Chrysler/Mercedes Halo key, but has the editing features grayed out. Sucks. Can see it, get into it, even turn stuff on and off for diag, but can't edit it. Hear many have been happy with their Autels. Most of them will do what you want if you feel like paying for the software. Not to mention the year to year changes/updates. The people we use for recoding ignition/on board alarm says they pay about 10,000 a year to stay updated. But they can do about 10 cars a day at at least 100 or more each. And that's all they do along with lock smithing. We at most do 10 cars a year that need to be coded. Most of what we do is for ECM/PCM, BCM and HVAC. The ones that have to be coded are attempted thefts and worn out lock cylinders when we can't save the old tumblers and have the new lock matched to the old key.

If you can swing it, Autologic. I use mine more the dealer supplied scan tools at work. I've been able to do more with it that most OEM scan tools. Then again, most OEM scan tools are quite a bit cheaper

Make sure the tool you get Displays Live Data Stream and can read CAN (Controller Area Network).

I use a Snapon Solus on a daily basis now - good tool, not much it can't do. However if I had the choice, I would suggest the Snapon Modis... best "universal" scan tool/scope/multimeter etc. that I have ever used. Have about 6 years experience with the Modis and 2 with the Solus. Works out great for our shop because we can just have our snapon dealer that drops by update it with the latest software when it gets released.
Good luck with what you decide.
