Dead sunfire! (Page 1/2)

2005 Pontiac Sunfire
2.2l ecotec
5 speed
115,000 miles
I was driving & I kept gradually loss power / RPM’s. If I pushed the engine too hard it would die out.
The only code it throws is a ‘random misfire’. No specific cylinder.
Right now it will start but almost immediately die but if I give it lots of throttle it will roughly idle – REALLY rough!
The exhaust smells of raw fuel & the plugs are fouling. I’m getting too much fuel.
I’m running out of parts to throw at it. I’m wondering about the Crank position sensor being bad but wouldn’t that trigger a code??
Getting pretty frustrated at this point. I’m obviously not finding the problem.

New parts:
Fuel pump & filter
Coils & Ignition control module
Fuel injector pressure regulator
IAC - idle air control sensor
TPS - throttle position sensor
Coolant temp sensor

MAF sensor or MAP? (or both?)
MAP, I'd check for a vacuum leak.
MAF...usually have a MAP too, you could try disconnecting the MAF and see if it'll run in safe mode without it. Or vice versa.

I'd probably check out the EGR valve. I had a saturn that did just what your describing. It was intermittant, but when it went it was just like you describe. EGR was stuck open. Disconnect it and give it a few resonable whacks to loosen it so it closes. Or take it off and plug the holes and see if it runs thereafter.

Pop the hood open on a dark night and mist the engine with water (Windex comes ready to go) and look for arcing to ground from your ignition system. My only other thought would be a plugged catalytic converter.

Multiple failed Fuel Injectors will flood out the motor in a hurry.

My bet would be crank sensor .

Do a compression check. Do it soon. Mine very similar when it slipped timing. Its an interference head has a little play before slips and kisses the pistons. They have a hydraulic timing tensioner that goes bad.

Thanks for the advise! I think this is what I'll be doing next.

Cat sounds possible. My Fiero had the same issue when the cat plugged. Pull the pre-cat O2 and see if it fixes it.

Been talking about my issue with a friend that is a diesel mechanic but started his career out at a GM dealership. He also suggested pulling the o2 sensor. Got under the car last night to get some PB sprayed on. Will pull the sensor this weekend.

Any other test results coming back yet? Really curious on this one
