I have a chance to get a second generation trans am. that needs to be restored I have a first generation Firebird. that needs to be restored. I think I can sell the Firebird and get enough money to make the second generationa drivable which one will end up being a better car.

I'd rather have a 1st gen Firebird over a 2nd gen T/A up to about '77. I like the '77+ styling. That said, assuming both are in similar condition, the 1st gen Firebird is worth more money (and always will be).
How 'bout some specifics of both cars (year, sub model, drivetrain, etc)?

Honestly, I'd consider selling your Firebird and getting something that doesn't need a complete restoration. If you're dead set on getting an older F body, there are a zillion of them all over. You can probably find a good later 2nd gen driver for under $3k.

Give me the first generation every time. Monkey pretty much has the rest of it covered.

I've always like the early and late 2nd gen cars best. The 70-73 Camaros (especially the split bumper cars), the 75 and earlier SD Trans Ams and the 80-81 sloped nose Trans Ams are my favorites. The 77 and later Z-28 is also good. I was in high school in the early eighties, so there were LOTS of these running around when I was young and impressionable.

Win or win.
The 1st gen is a first gen f-body that you don't see EVERYWHERE. The 2nd gen is the Smokey and the Bandit car.
Such a hard call. This is a problem I would love to have.

What year is the Firebird? How's the floor pan on the 78? It sounds like the 78 is in far better shape. Just from the little info we have, I'd go with the one needing less work.

The SD455 was only available in '73-'74. Only 1296 total SD455 cars were sold over those two years. http://www.sd455registry.com/
Some great info on the differences of the various years: http://www.transamworld.com/fbird-history-php2.php
