Pontiac G6. Automatic shifter question. (Page 1/1)
Raydar MAY 24, 10:12 PM
I realize this is a long shot, but the G6 forums are pretty useless. There's lots of knowledge here.

Does anyone know if the 4T45E tranny, that came with the 3.5, uses the same shift cable for the regular automatic shifter as for the "tap shift"?

Mine is a 2010. As far as I know, there were no tap shift cars produced in that year (They were all rental cars.)
But all the previous years had a regular automatic and a tap shift available with the 3.5.

Edit - This should be essentially the same car as the 2010 Malibu, if that helps.

Thanks.

The wife's 2007 G6 GT convertible had tap shift. I think we might have used it 5 times. I'm not sure you're missing anything. Sorry that I don't have an answer.

Thanks Tom.
I wouldn't bother with it (I still may not, depending...) except that the regular shifter only has OD, 3, and 1. It skips 2nd. I have no way to manually select it. I don't know who thought that was a good idea, but I disagree.

No prob. Now I know why you want to do it. How do you like the new ride?

It's great!
Not like this is the most important thing, but it's got more options on it than any vehicle I've ever owned. And everything works.
It gets decent mileage, which was my main consideration. The Trailblazer that I was driving was doing well to get 15 MPG.
I regularly get 20+ with the G6, even with my heavy foot.
I'm a bit disappointed with the G6 forums, however. Not a lot of activity taking place. Seems like people dropped them like a hot potato, when GM dropped Pontiac.
Makes me appreciate this place even more.

I put new brake pads on the front, the first week, and replaced the tires (and wheels).
Before the tire replacement, I had an intermittent "ABS/Traction Control" chime/light, but it hasn't been back. Makes me wonder if the system is that picky about tire diameter (worn tires.)

It's a lot of fun to drive. Strangely enough, this is the first FWD vehicle I've ever owned. Makes me wonder how people even keep Grand Prix GTPs on the ground, since I can induce wheelspin without much effort.
This engine (VVT 3.5) would be a riot in a Fiero. Even with the stock 220 HP.
I may try to figure out how to make such a swap happen.

The wife loved her G6, but after she bought the CTS, I don't think she ever drove the G6 again (even though she had it for almost another 8 months trying to get a decent price on it). She had the 3.9 and it had no problem at all spinning the tires. What kind of tires did you buy? I think the Goodyears on hers were an ongoing issue.

I bought Kumho LE Sport tires, in 235/45-18. They're wider and taller than the 225/50-17s that they replaced, but I have the software to retune the revs/mile, so that the speedo is still accurate. (It'll also come in handy if I have to reflash the TCM to accommodate the tapshift, or change most anything else in the tune. I don't care too much about tuning, since MPG was/is my priority.)
They don't spin as easily as the Hankooks did, but I can still spin them without much effort. I don't know if the Hankooks were OE or not, but I didn't much care for them.

Goodyears were OE on the wife's 2007 GT. Not sure about yours though.
