Ford Windstar AC air direction problem (Page 1/1)

2002 Ford Windstar. Upon acceleration the AC air will change where it comes out of the blowers. For example it will shift to blowing out the defrost vents, and then to the foot vents. After the van has cruised for a minute or two it will shift back to the dash blowers. I had this happen before and I replaced the blend door actuator, so I figured it was the same problem. The actuator has plastic gears for opening and closing the blend doors, and they will break very easily. Unfortunately after pulling the actuator this time, and opening it, it is in perfect condition, and I still have the same problem. Any ideas where to look next? Relay? Vacuum issue? I'm stumped. Google search just keeps directing me back to the actuator.

Well I finally found a youtube that directed me to a vacuum line that commonly pops off. Mine was unplugged and I plugged it back in. Air still switch sources, but did improve a little, as it would return to the dash a lot quicker than before. I may still have another vacuum leak somewhere.

You might want to hook a vacuum gauge to it and see if it holds vacuum.

While I'm not familiar with the Windstar system, MOST cars that use vacuum to operate the heating/air system have a check valve in one of the vacuum lines to prevent vacuum loss under acceleration. Your symptoms match perfectly with the check valve being bad.......

I did, finally, find a vacuum hose that was disconnected, symptoms did improve somewhat, but they still persist. However, I have not been able to find a check valve or a vacuum cannister. I can google schematics, but can't find an image of where they are located. biggest problem is most of the junk is on the back side of the engine under the cowl. I'm sure it's back there, I just need to keep digging.
