Jeep CRD? (Page 1/1)

I'm in the market for a used car. One requirement is 4WD.
I'm considering a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. This is the 3.0L CRD V6 model.
Does anyone have any experience with this generation or the engine?
Any common problems or things to be on the lookout for?

Please, please please use the correct fluids! Use only low ash oil and oem filters, available from your local Mercedes dealer. Will prevent lots of problems I have seen!

The Jeep 3.0 diesel is a Mercedes engine more commonly seen in the Sprinter vans, ML's, GL's, R Classes I work on It is an engine used during the "dark ages" when it was DaimlerChrysler. Where do you want me to start? Top to bottom or bottom to top? I have seen stretched timing chains - more common lately, turbo failures, lower intake linkages worn out, leaking oil coolers, well oil leaks from everything really, high pressure fuel pump failures, engine failures due to incorrectly installed high pressure fuel pumps, porous cylinder heads, poor castings in cylinder heads causing leaks, glow plugs are terrible and have a high failure rate and usually take the glow plug controller with them, diesel particulate filters plugged - though this is usually related to other issues, like ignoring the check engine light, once it comes on you have 200 miles to correct the issue before it starts getting really expensive. Most of the 07-08-09 engines I work on are higher mileage now. They are fairly bullet proof and will last a long time PROPERLY cared and maintained. Just serviced a 2008 Sprinter today with 991,000 miles, ran perfect and lots of power. It all depends on the owner! If you have any specific questions go ahead and ask, I'll help out when I can.

Sounds like a lot of those common failures could be a good place to start with maintenance on any used car.
I haven't looked at the Jeep yet, but I like the idea of a diesel for better power and economy. Both the Jeep and the CRD itself are new to me, so I don't know what common issues to look for. I'll definitely pay close attention to oil leaks, etc.

Are the glow plugs and diesel particulate filters a regular maintenance item? From your description it sounds best just to change them out on any used car as a precaution. Timing chains, turbo failures and bad cylinder heads are more worrisome. I guess if I find one with a good service history, I'll know if I got a good one and make sure to maintain it from there. Anything I'm looking at will likely have 60k or more miles on it.

Neither the glow plugs or particulate filter are maintenance items. Replaced as the fail. Keep in mind, most of the vehicles I work on are severe duty, I worked on a 2013 van with almost 150,000 miles on it. These things don't ever stop. Usually see a failed glow plug or 6 around the 40,000 mile mark, particulate filters around 100,000. I doubt you will have that many issues with it. Being it is an 07 Jeep, you shouldn't have to worry about SCR, that is a whole 'nother nightmare.

Instead was of asking opinions read lots and lots of owner reviews, I would recommend that you look very heavy into jeep and diesel forums.
