Looking for some hints on diagnosing a squeal coming from my winter beater when turning the wheel at idle/low RPM.
My first thought was power steering pump. Since I live by myself, I can't turn the wheel and see what's going on under the hood at the same time. But was able to contort myself enough to turn the wheel and see that when the noise is occurring, the power steering reservoir starts shaking away. It's maybe a hair low on fluid, not sure if that might be the cause, seems somewhat suspect though.
It sounds much like belt squeal, but as mentioned, only happens when turning the wheel close to the extremes in either direction. Drive belt perhaps? The car has about 300,000km on it and I paid $1,000 for it, so don't want to sink heaps of money into it.
Any tips would be appreciated!

Sounds like it could a glazed belt and belt squeel. If it were me I would first try running a bar of soap against the belt on both sides while the car was running to see if that makes any difference. If it does it is probably the belt, then it is your choice to replace the belt, live with it as is, or try some batl dressing products they sell at parts stores (which probably will work for a short period).

I'll probably be having a look at it this weekend sometime. Thanks for the tips!
Would it be logical to think the reservoir shaking would be the side effect of the belt slipping and re-grabbing?
