It's a 2007 335i and they have to do what's called "register" the battery with the charging system. That's one hour of labor at $189 per hour and the cost of the battery which is completely different from any normal known battery. My 2000 BMW 328i has a normal battery and you don't have to deal with any of that BS! [This message has been edited by BrittB (edited 08-24-2014).]

So, on the similar car a year older, you could have used any old battery from Sears but on his fancy car, you have to buy an expensive batter THEN take it to a shop so they can tell the car that the battery is there? Seems a big unreasonable but i guess, when you want to play, you gotta pay.
Good thing all I can afford are cheap cars and trucks. When mine finally dies, I'll pop over to Autozone and but something that looks similar to what I've got, toss it in the truck and drive away.

I'm glad it's not my car but I'm the one tasked with figuring out what's wrong with it. Since I do all my own work on my own stuff people who can't afford dealership come to me like moths to a light blub. Check out how big a PIA these things are!

Can you plug one of those 9 volt batteries into the cigarette light to maintain the codes and thus not have to "register the battery?"
Just another reason not to buy a BMW...

Send a PM to bmwguru on this forum. He'll be able to give you the low-down. Sounds like BS to me, but I don't know the cars, so I'll stop there.

Wonder what it would do to the car if you tried to jump start it

From what I understand is that the battery's condition is monitored and it relates to charging cycles, etc. So, the new battery must be "registered". Anyway, there is a tool to do it yourself, or take a matching battery and go to an independent shop and have them do it.
