I'm looking at some Mustangs. All of them are 05-09 models. All are coupes except for one 05 convertible. All are V6 with 5-speed manual transmissions.
Are there any particular things I should look for or avoid?
Can a GT front bumper with the 4 round headlights be swapped on easily? Are the wiring harnesses compatable to power the extra two lights?
What are some common mods that people do by pulling from the GT, CS, or Shelby parts bins?

Hi,
I had a fairly built 2005 GT. The only thing in 3 years of ownership I had to do were front wheel bearings (probably due to autocrossing) and a power steering pump. I had a Watts link, Strano big bars, 4.10's , Bama Tune, Magnaflow cat back, Intake, Steeda springs, Tokico Adjustables... was a great car. Interior fit and finish was crap, but the rest of the car was great.
The day it left, now owned by a track and used for instruction.

Had an 07 GT. I would recommend staying away from the 05-10 V6 mustangs. By the time you add all of the things necessary to have a stock GT look and performance you will have spent the same amount of money as buying a GT (or possibly more). The GT's are great though. I would look for a lightly modded GT with low miles. They can be had for less than 20k now. When you buy the V6 you have about a 330 HP ceiling performance wise. With the GT you can easily go to 500 HP without messing with the internals.

My plan is to use this Mustang as a step toward an even nicer, more expensive car later. I hate the thought of going into debt so this can be paid for in less than a year. I need the economy of the V6/5-speed while I'm driving so many interstate miles.
I drove a 2010 V6 manual yesterday. What a difference one year can make!! The interior is SO much nicer! Wish I could get one.[This message has been edited by Boostdreamer (edited 08-31-2014).]

In 2011, Ford changed the V6 to an all new, aluminum block 3.7. This engine is supposed to weigh 40 lbs less, is physically smaller, has almost 100 more horsepower, AND gets better gas mileage with the automatic than the old V6 gets with the manual transmission.

That's the one I would want.

This is where I'd be looking as well. I also understand from a guy at work, who is heavily into Fords, that this V6 "responds well" to tuning.

Have you considered buying new? Some of the Ford lots near me are still trying to push old Mustang stock off the lot, and in particular they're letting V6 cars go SUPER dirt cheap; like it almost swayed me into buying one. My local dealer had both a red and a silver Mustang with the V6 and one was marked $19,000 and the other $19,500 with 0% APR. They have to get them gone because once the 2015 comes in everyone is going to want it. If you're just going to perform some mods anyway then it may be worth getting the cheap V6. I've read also that the V6 responds well to basic modifications. I personally have no experience with them though as I've only dealt with GT trim cars.

I've been eyeing these for a long, long time. Shop carefully. Seems everyone tries to sell their used mustang at HUGE prices. i see 10 year old cars priced at $15000. I've seen new coupes with manual trans heavily discounted in LA 'cause no one wants to drive them in traffic; around $20k. result = prices get squeezed and you can get a reasonable price but you have to shop and haggle.
I'd love to have a gold 2011 convertible but they're still around $15-16 average from what i've seen.

X2, they've gone to the new body style and want to move the old stock. I firmly believe in buying the last year of a car, you end up with the best version with the most bugs worked out.
