Looking for 94 Grand Prix parts (Page 1/2)

I'm hoping the far-reaching aspect of PFF can help me. I have a 1994 Grand Prix that is my daily driver. For the past few years, I've been having problems with the latch on the driver's door. When the temperature would turn cold in late Fall - early Winter, the door would stop opening when pulling on the outer door handle. I'd take it to the local dealer, they'd adjust it, and it would work fine again until the next Winter. The last couple of times, they've told me that the door latch mechanism is wearing out, and it would only be a matter of time until they could no longer adjust it. That day came this week. The outside door handle broke...again...and I replaced it. I opened and closed the door several times before I buttoned everything up and put away my tools, and it worked fine when I opened the door to back the car out into the street. Once I parked the car, it wouldn't open...from the outside OR the inside...and hasn't opened since. I took it to the dealer today, and they told me that there was no more they could do...upon physical inspection, they were worried if they opened the door to try and adjust it, that they wouldn't be able to close it again. So...I've spent all afternoon on various websites, trying to find a latch for the driver's side door, with no luck. Either they want to sell me a whole door, or they just don't have one in the lot. The parts I need are no longer available from GM or the aftermarket. So, I'm hoping that someone here might know of a 94 or 95 Grand Prix sitting in a local junkyard, or know someone that has a parts car. What I need is the latch mechanism...the part that actually bolts to the door, and has fingers that close on the striker bolt, holding the door closed, for a 94 Grand Prix, 2 dr. coupe, driver's side.. I also need the adjusting rod that runs from the latch up to the outer door handle. Any and all help is greatly appreciated...I'm having to crawl over the console to get into the driver's seat, and with a partial knee replacement looming in my immediate future, you can imagine that it's a bit hard to do.

I've checked on-line, but no luck there. I'll call see if any of the local guys will sell just the latch. At least being able to search on-line, I know which ones have had GPs on their lots.

I just got an email from an online vendor in Louisiana. Says he's got the latch for $340. I can buy a whole door here for less than that, but I'm trying to avoid that and buy just the latch and rod.

You can also use the 94 Buick Park Ave.

I'm going to have to look at my Helms manual and see if the 4 door model uses the same latch as the 2 door. If not, a Park Avenue won't help. WIsh I had a Hollander Interchange Manual...

Thanks for the info...unfortunately, I can't get that website to work. I signed up, and then tried to create a listing for the part I wanted. Everytime I'd click on the "create listing" button, it would bring me back to the log in screen...I'd log in, and then click on the "create listing" button again...and it would bring me right back to the log in screen. Just one vicious circle...

Try the wrecking yard after a heavey rain, on average for a large city they have 300 wrecks for the first two days (600 cars). An easy fix would be to replace the whole door.

Go to car-part.com
Find your model and year. Search for "latches".
There's a left front door latch in TN for $35. I'm sure there are probably others.

You might get away with using one from a Lumina, or any "W" body of a similar vintage.

Thanks for the info, Steve. I've hit so many websites searching for the part that I'm not sure, but I believe I've already been there, and sent out a request for a quote. I'm not familiar with the setup on a Lumina, but I know that either a Grand Prix or an Olds Cutlass will have the parts I need. I checked the listing for the latches on car-part.com just now, and there are quite a few, but many of them are for a 4 door, which is different, and some of them are the inner door handle, not the actual latch which holds the door shut.
