71 VW. My wife won't let me take this home. (Page 1/2)

When I arrived at work this afternoon, this was sitting across the street from the parking garage.

I didn't have time for a closer look.

Soo....don't bring it home. Park it at your mistress' house.

I don't even know why I want it. I just love the old Beetles, and this one appears to be unaltered.

Unless it's been a Florida car it's entire life (and even if it has been), the floor pan is probably rusted out. That's a common problem with the original Beetles. Rusted floor pan means no heat, you get wet when you run through a puddle and you run the risk of your seat falling through. If you're a decent shade tree mechanic and are handy with a welder, it's a relatively easy fix. Running boards tend to rust out, too. I had a '75 Super fuel injected that was a blast. Unfortunately, it had the typical VW Bug rust and I had to end up junking it.

Love old Beetles, I had 2. Rolled the first one at 65mph, ended up on it's side under water. I was driving it again 2 days later. What other car could survive that? However the police were no amused.

It's easier to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission...

Apparently, she noticed that it didn't have pop-out rear windows. She's waiting for a better-optioned example.

1971. Desirable flat window, and revised front suspension.

I remember seeing them on the Florida turnpike as a kid. A lot of the drivers would run them flat out all day at 75 to 80. You could see the front end shifting from side to side on the road at those speeds.

You buy it for me, I'll let you sign your name on the title for now. I'll even let you store it at your place and if you feel like working on it, go for it.
