Looking at compact wagons... Mazda3, Mazdaspeed3, or older Protege5. Other ideas? (Page 1/1)

Does anyone have any comments or observations on any of them?
I'm thinking the larger engine option (but not necessarily the Mazdaspeed, although it's not out of the question) and a manual tranny.

Requirements are:
Probably at least 48" between the rear shock towers. Has to have room for a couple of dog crates, with the rear seats folded down.
Fun to drive. (To give you an idea of what that means... It's primarily going to be my wife's "putt around" vehicle. She likes getting hole shots on BMWs when she's in the Miata. I'll be driving it some, too.)
Decent fuel economy. The closer to 30 MPG, the better.

Aux audio input on the sound system? iPod control would be a plus.

Anyone?

The mix of width and economy is probably going to be a bit of a challenge. Looks like you're shopping ~10 year old cars and for the most part they come in economy cars (like the Protégé or 3) or luxury cars (like a Volvo or a BMW). The former will be smaller, the latter will get worse fuel economy. My personal picks would probably be a Volvo V70 or a BMW 3series Touring... I'd sacrifice a little economy for a little extra power. Have you considered a "cute ute" like an Escape or CRV or something?
