my son is looking for his first car and has picked out an 06 passat with 92k miles. nice looking and clean and rides and runs nice. it has the 3.6 v6 in it. I know nothing about VW's. seems to be a nice car for the money he can afford.

I would be cautious of a 10 year old VW for a young driver. They can be pricey to maintain, although at least this generation of Passat moved away from the Audi underpinnings to strictly VW stuff... kind of a bullet dodged. This Passat was pretty widely criticized for that, in fact, because it was a much cheaper feeling/driving/performing car than Passats before. Honestly, given the potential maintenance headaches and costs, and the fact that the B6 Passat really wasn't a great enough car to justify them I'd look elsewhere.

thanks for the input. I was kind of leaning that way.

I'm not sure about your area, but around here the VWs with 5-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines are all selling cheap, because people are trying to get rid of them. The Passat is going to be expensive to maintain, and is a gas-hog. Auto insurance is also going to be higher than a more modest car.

So even though the selling price may be attractive, the total cost of ownership could quickly spiral out of control.

Some good choices for first-time car owners are the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. Or if your son is stuck on Volkswagens, look for a base-model Jetta with the 2.0 4-cyl. (I'd suggest the Jetta TDI, but its care and feeding may be beyond the ability of a younger driver)

Here's an article from Edmunds that may help: http://www.edmunds.com/car-...or-teen-drivers.html

Best of luck!

And, then there's the recent flap about the cars not meeting emissions standards.

Only the 2009+ diesel ones, though

There ought to be a bunch of VW diesels coming onto the market for dirt cheap.
