Anyone know anything about Wranglers? Guy wants to trade one for a car I'm selling, and while doing so doesn't get me cash and doesn't free up driveway it could be a fun diversion for a little while. I just don't want to get into a money pit or end up stuck with something that has congenital flaws and nobody else wants.
What he's offering is a '97 (TJ) with the four cylinder and a 5-speed. I'd prefer the six, but meh, who really cares? I'm not taking it racing or offroading, just putting around town. And, maybe there is some charm in owning some of the last AMC parts in production. Looks pretty nice, but has 200k on it. I'm not sure if that's something to worry about or not. Ultimately I'm less worried about the financial wisdom of the deal and more worried about the mechanical wisdom. It has some new parts on the motor and looks to be in good shape. Assuming average maintenance and 200k, is it a ticking time bomb or just old?

If it was a Cherokee with an inline 6, I'd say go for it. I don't know much about about TJ's with 4 bangers.

owning a tj i will say where did it live its life. the frames rust out really bad really fast. That 4 cylinder is gutless. Mine was lifted and it just guzzled gas. 12 mpgs. Was very reliable though. Some issues with the wiring but that's common in areas around here as corrosion effects grounds. If it was in nice weather I would not be worried.

Northern California, so rust is not the concern.
