Picked up our Saturn Sky eight years ago today (Page 1/2)

Ordered it in May from a dealer in San Jose who had an allocation, because that was the only way to get one in 2007, waited three months, then flew down to pick it up. Spent the night with friends in Pacific Grove, then spent the next two days driving it home to Seattle up Highway 1/101 the entire way. Hard to believe it's been eight years. Very fun car, nice complement to the Fiero. Had 8 miles on it at pickup and about 24,000 miles now.

I love those.

Very nice!

I have a 2008 Sky Redline, but my story's a bit different. When they came out, I had 2 kids in college and the dealers were less than competitive on the Kappas. After the PO took the hit on depreciation. I bought mine in the fall of 2012. I flew up to St. Louis and spent 8 hours getting mine home. It had 11,000 miles on it and I've added 10,000 more. I really enjoy my sky too, but I wish I had more opportunities to drive it.

To say the least. Our local dealer tried to sell me a used 2.4 for over MSRP while I waited what they told me would be "two years" to get a Red Line.

I started making calls to dealers, working my way out from Seattle, until I found one, Saturn of Capitol Expressway in San Jose, who had an open allocation. The deal was done entirely over the phone- I sent them my code list and a deposit via credit card, the salesman (Ron Ryan, total stand-up dude) placed the order, and I watched the status codes change week by week as it went into production, was built, loaded on a train and shipped to San Jose. It was actually fun to spend the summer excited about it, and to jump on a plane to fly down and get it.

And yes, great fun cars. The body lines, like the Fiero GT, really appeal to me.

Mine has the GM tune, a billet grill, the wind deflector in the pics, a 2010 head unit with USB, the DDM clamps to fix blow-by in the charge air system (cheap GM clamps), JPM Coachworks padded arm rest, and Norm's rear diffuser.

I kept checking on a Solstice purchase when they were rolling them out and they wanted way more than sticker and the wait time was too long also. I think they were limiting supply to ensure profitability. I'm not sure how it worked at Saturn with their no haggle pricing. The only mod I made to my car was to install a ind deflector(the one that went next to the trunk seal. It tightened up the fit of the seal to the point that I took it off and returned it for a refund. How do you like your deflector? I considered the tune, but the car already has enough oomph for me, so I'll let that sleeping dog lay where it's at.

Saturn honored their no-haggle pricing; I paid list for mine. But the dealer here in Bellevue did try to sell me a used 2.4 for over MSRP.

The tune is a bit like going from a 2.8 in Fiero to a 3.4: Not a quantum leap, but noticeable. The torque increase, from 260 to 340 on the five speeds, is very noticeable.

Interesting what happens to vehicle pricing when you get outside of Michigan. I bought my 2008 GXP Solstice new in August 2008 and paid $8,000.00 below MSRP.

I got the "one year waiting list... if you'd like to put down a deposit..."routine. You did VERY well. I might have bought one had they treated me like that.

We looked at about 10 of them at 5 or 6 different dealerships in southeast Michigan and they were all below MSRP. I guess that is one advantage of living in the Detroit area.

I owned a 07 Redline, purchased used in 2009 and I sold it last year.

I loved the car but hated the roof system. The Sky was a great vehicle, I loved every moment of it and I met some AWESOME people through the solstice and Sky clubs and all the National meets.

I'd like to get another Kappa some day, I'm a patient guy and if there is a next time it will be a Solstice Coupe. I'm not a fan of the regular solstice but the coupe is one sexy looking beast and I won't have to deal with the vert's roof system.
