So the 289 in the 64 Fairlane developed a major coolant leak behind the front cover next to the block. The repair of this one gasket involves a big effort so, I am thinking to make it worth my effort. The front cover is off, I have a 302 loaded with parts, it is time to rob Peter to pay Paul. The 302 heads are 68 4V with small combustion chamber(higher compression) and ported. Grab the big cam, lifters, 1.6 rockers, old school high rise aluminum intake. Oh, and the double roller timing chain. This should help use up most of the gaskets. By not using the 302, I do not need to weld the motor mounts, buy a flywheel, a bell housing, the back plate(whatever that is called, or fix the rear seal oil leak the other guy added to the engine.
This should determine when the 289 block needs repair or replacing because if I do not get what I expect, I will feed it nitrous. I have the 275HP kit.

So, for the moment I am buying a used complete 260ci. This means the car will be back running in a day and I have bought myself some time to work on the 289 or whatever dammable effort I decide to do. I have built mad power into a motor before and I know that is not where I want to go.

The old engine is loose in the engine compartment. I am pulling the cast iron 65 4V intake to put on the 63 260. Should at least be interesting. The guys I picked it up from claim it was rebuilt about 50K miles ago,( if that could be trusted). It seems I forgot how how much work it is to pull an engine, or my body did. Doing this in the driveway, loving California weather, it was a great day Sunday November 23. [This message has been edited by FriendGregory (edited 11-23-2015).]

If my car breaks down in your town, I love you and will be right over.

Proof I can get stupid. The new engine runs great but, the car does not move. As with a lot of this car, I have been using left over parts that I had for over 20 years, I used a NIB high stall converter left from the Meteor. In the Meteor I had a 74 C4 transmission, and the input shaft is larger than the 64. So, did I damage anything with the startup? I cranked the engine until I had oil pressure, started immediately when I connected the coil wire to the distributor, with slight turn, it ran. The rockers were noisy at first so, it is possible that I might have missed over unexpected noises. The positive is that the engine seems to be fine!
