2010 fusion 3.5 problem (Page 1/1)

Here's a short rundown leading up to the problem. Was going to work earlier one of the recent teen digit mornings and noticed i was getting heat going up hill but cold going down hill. So my conclusion was low on coolant. Should be good to make it 15 miles to work. Well about a mile from work the temp gauge went straight to hot. This was not good. Stopped at the nearest parking lot and it died right there. 1/2 a mile to go with one light in between. Sat there about 10 minutes waiting on it to cool and to get the timing right for traffic and light. Well made it to the light and it died again. Sat another 10 minutes and made it to work. Died again at work parking lot. Called the local ford dealer to come get and bring some coolant. They added less than a gallon and drove it to their shop. Talked to them later that day and they said it had a rod knocking. $7000+ for a new motor. To me it sounded like the water pump not getting coolant or valve train noise. Haven't got it home yet to check out and not a warm place to work on it either. Looked at used motors and about 1/10 the cost of a new one. Anybody had similar problems? Areas to look at for problems ? Rebuild or used? Has not been a good week, furnace quit monday, wrecked truck wednesday, car died thursday.

Yep, you have had a horrible, no good, very bad week. I suppose the car is still at the dealer? I'm wondering where almost one gallon of coolant went to? A bad water pump would explain where the coolant went to. Did the garage mention head gasket, cracked block (you did check the strength of your anti-freeze?), bad water pump? My favorite stethoscope is a length of heater hose; put one end to your ear and move the other end to various parts of the engine to isolate the engine noise (while avoiding moving parts).

The car is still at the dealers. Tow truck suppose to get moved Monday or Tuesday. I have a regular car stethoscope. A water pump replacement takes 12 hours, it runs off the timing chain. I haven't check the color of the oil yet either to see if it's contaminated from coolant. Oh well. A used motor might be the best and sell it.

Wow, lots of potential variables here but rod knock from a single overheat sounds kinda weird - unless maybe they killed it on the drive to their shop. I'm actually really shocked a dealer would take a chance on someone else's car with a drive knowing there was a cooling system problem. Without a little more investigation I don't know what my approach would be, but based on this info a used engine would top the list.

Well they got the car home today. I started it and listened to the engine. Sounded like some upper end valve train noise. Shut it off and checked the oil. Well it looked like a milk shake. So head gasket, cracked block or head or maybe the water pump, have to research that some more.
