One of my sons has a Chevy Cavalier with the 2.2 OHV engine. It overheated, and a shop replaced the radiator, water pump, and thermostat. I'm trying to figure out why it is still running warm. The gauge goes up about 2/3 toward the high end, and the engine smells hot but not quite overheated. I did burp the system. All the hoses are good. Clean water comes out of the heater core. There is no water in the oil. What else is going on? Back flush the whole system and start over?

Possible head gasket.
It doesn't necessarily have to have an intermix to be a head gasket. It could push out the exhaust.
Is there a fair amout of exhaust vapor?
Dripping liquid out the tailpipe?
Sweet smelling exhaust?
Popping exhaust sounds?
Also, check the heat. Another possibility is plugged heater core. But those engine are known for head gaskets.

Haven't checked anything at the exhaust. Will do. Thanks.

My old truck was overheating.... nothing out the exhaust. I pressure tested the system overnight and filled up a cylinder with coolant. Just a bad headgasket in my case. No external leaks, no real loss of coolant, etc... but it ran hot sometimes.

If it is the head gasket the over flow tank will probably become very low or empty soon because of the exhaust gasses pushing air into the system. You can add more coolant but eventually it's going to become undriveable. If you have access to compressed air you can inject air into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and listen / look for bubbles in the over flow tank.

A girlfriend had a Cavalier that was overheating. I couldnt find nothing obvious wrong like low coolant or waterpump. She finally blew up the engine. Put in a new motor that also was overheating. Testing everything we could, we found it had a bad in tank fuel pump. Didnt know if that had anything to do with it, but replaced the pump anyway. It never overheated again for the next 2 years. It stopped the day I put the pump in
