"The taquito hot seat: Socializing monolingual bias through error correction practices in a Portuguese language classroom"

That's the title of a research report that was published recently (October, 2021) in a "research-y" kind of journal called "Foreign Language Annals."

The author, Dr Uju Anya, is a professor of linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University.

"[Carnegie Mellon] University condemns professor’s posts wishing Queen ‘excruciating’ death"

Sheila Flynn for The (U.K.) Indpendent; September 9, 2022.

Some highlights from the article:

quote
Carnegie Mellon University has condemned social media posts by one of its professors after Dr Uju Anya wished the Queen an “excruciating” death and tweeted that she hoped the Queen would die “in agony.”

Dr Anya made the comments Thursday as reports emerged that the Queen was in her final hours at Balmoral.

“I heard the chief monarch of a thieving raping genocidal empire is finally dying. May her pain be excruciating,” the professor wrote before it was announced the Queen had died.

Twitter took down the tweet for violating its policy; it has not responded to The Independent’s request for comment.

quote
Dr Anya, who describes herself on Twitter as an “antiracist” and “feminist,” was born in Nigeria to a Nigerian father and mother from Trinidad and Tobago. Both countries were colonised by the British—Nigeria became independent in 1960, with Trinidad and Tobago following suit two years later.

Just another example of the tolerant leftist love. If they hate you,.. you must not be that bad?

As anyone could expect, this has given rise to a lengthy conversation on Twitter.

I think the university would not be well served if they were to fire this professor, or take any kind of disciplinary action against her.

I have no reason to think that is even under consideration.

Let the professor have her say. Let the public (which includes everyone else who is part of the university or is enrolled there as a student) have their say, about what she said.

If you're a lefty, free speech is fine, as long as it's your side. If the professor had been a lighter shade, or leaned to the right, she'd have been disemboweled, drawn, and quartered, by now.

Can you think of a clearcut example of that? A particular professor? Was that a professor that was fired or otherwise disciplined by a college or university, or just "pilloried" in the press or on social media over their views, or over something they said?

I can't think of one off the top of my head.

  • Every white PhD that spoke out against COVID vaccines.
  • Every white PhD that spoke out against "masking"
  • Every white PhD that spoke out against lock-downs
  • Every white financial analyst that said we were officially in a recession

Why create such a disgusting topic on this Forum?

Clueless trolling. Childish attention seeking. Lack of appropriate social skills. Take your pick or all three.

Fired or otherwise disciplined by their employer as a consequence of their views or what they said? Or just "pilloried" in the press or on social media?

And what can anyone remember that would draw a distinction here between "every white PhD or financial analyst" or just "every PhD or financial analyst"..?

"Every" is a high bar to clear, if anyone were to try to provide tangible and specific support for these assertions from 82-T/A.

Many? I guess that's discussible. Not saying that anyone should discuss it. My time, like everyone else's here... this really isn't the most important thing I need to be focused on. But I do so much enjoy the vibrancy of this Politics & Religion forum—the energy that has reemerged in recent weeks, and the somewhat larger number of different people that are having their say.
