A sign that Russia is narrowing its focus to the eastern part of Ukraine (Donbas) (Page 1/1) |

Russia gloms onto the Donbas regions and Mariupol, creating a contiguous swathe of Russian or Russian-controlled territory stretching all the way from Russia proper, south to the Crimean Peninsula. A "land bridge."
quote | Russia signaled on Friday that it may be reducing its war aims. The Defense Ministry said that the goals of the “first stage of the operation” had been “mainly accomplished,” with Ukraine’s combat power “significantly reduced.” Maj. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi said that Russia would now focus on defeating Ukrainian forces in the eastern Donbas region.
While Russia “does not exclude” that its forces will storm major Ukrainian cities such as Kyiv, he said that taking them over was not a primary objective. |

Anton Troianovski from Istanbul, in the New York Times; March 25, 2022.
Ukraine emerges from this "downsized", but with all of its other major cities: Lyiv in the west, the large capital city Kyiv and its second largest city Kharkiv, and historic Odessa in the south, a seaport on the Black Sea.
Ukraine foreswears joining the NATO military alliance but is free to seek full membership in the European Union, with trading and financial privileges that will enable this new, smaller Ukraine to function economically and culturally as a Western-facing nation, independent of the Kremlin's very heavy "thumb."
Some of the Western-led international economic and cultural sanctions on Russia and Russians are pulled back.
That's how I'm thinking this transitions.
"Prove me wrong."[This message has been edited by rinselberg (edited 03-25-2022).]

Almost everyone on earth. Some, more than others. But I'm not about to attempt to be definitive about that, in any way.
The one thing I want to add is that Ukraine President Zelensky(y) signs the "deed" that formally cedes sovereignty over the Crimean Peninsula to Russia. From fait accompli (since 2014) to formal acceptance by Ukraine.
This is as close as I can come to getting my head around the next part of this tragedy.[This message has been edited by rinselberg (edited 03-25-2022).]
