and NO a cage will not help the long wires get the volts/amp/flow into the transformers really can't shield wires cross country
better quick trip out disconnects for a once in many lifetimes events at very high cost and a potential problem site also if it can trip will it at the wrong point load ect

The lines themselves are SUPPOSED to already have some sort of surge protection. They were gonna do that after the east-coast blackout 20 years ago.
So I guess we would have to check in on Pennocks by candlelight.

mega volt mega amp main transmission lines and their transformers are bolted huge connections even if power switching can it drop loads that fast/quick and not just a few but ALL AND IN AN INSTANT !
