Sort of reminds me of the Kennewick Man. The skull the army Corp of engineers found around the Snake River in Idaho that was the oldest skull found in North America and there was a controversy that the skull didn't appear Native American, but rather European.
Big hoopla happened where the Native American tribes sued to get the skull back and to get rid of it so that there wouldn't be European claim as the earliest or first humans in North America.
Oddly the Mormon Church help funded the lawsuit. That's because they believe that Native Americans are part of the lost tribe of Israel, and they didn't want that narrative smashed up either. They did give the skull back, and it was subsequently and quickly reburied (so the say). So we never really got to study it or get a DNA sample of it.
